Memorial Day Adventures
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day The Wikipedia definition of the Day is:
Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be held on May 28, 2018. The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. It marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan issued a proclamation calling for “Decoration Day” to be observed annually and nationwide; he was commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, the veterans’ organization for Union Civil War veterans. With his proclamation, Logan adopted the Memorial Day practice that had begun in the Southern states three years earlier.
The first northern Memorial Day was observed on May 30, 1868. One author claims that the date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle. According to a White House address in 2010, the date was chosen as the optimal date for flowers to be in bloom in the North. (read more about Memorial Day on Wikipedia)
Now Pop and I live in the town where General John A Logan is from. We take Memorial Day pretty serious in our town. The General John A. Logan Museum is a great resource that we are very lucky to have. Want to read more about the first Memorial Days (click here)?
They have a fabulous celebration every year for Memorial Day. If you live here and have never visited it then you are missing out.
Our Various Memorial Day Adventures
We all know the true meaning of Memorial Day and that it is a time for remembering those who came before us. But it also for most of us is the official kick-off of SUMMER! I don’t know about you but it seems like this winter has been 2 years long. So I am so excited for summer to almost be here. We have been working hard a getting our pool opened, decks and yards cleaned. So that when it gets here we get to play. I am ready to play in the sun!
Over the years we have done several different things to celebrate the coming of Summer on Memorial Day weekend! Here are just a few of our favorites!
Several years ago my sister Barb received 4 free tickets to the Indy 500 along with entrance to the Dr. Pepper Suite where we were provided food, drinks, and Dr. Pepper gear. It was a no-brainer since it was a Bucket List trip for Pop and I. So Barb, another sister Mo, Pop and I set out early Sunday morning as we just live a few hours away.
None of us had ever been to a race in Indy but we got there with no issues and found plenty of parking. As most of the neighborhoods let you park in their yard for a small fee and even have bathrooms for you to use.
After a short walk to the track, we found our seats and the hospitality room. We had great seats on the inside of the track right on the start/finish line and could see everything on Pit road. It was an excessively hot day that year but we still had a blast. We even got to see the entire Judd family as Ashleys Husband at the time won the race.
(Please tell me you know who the Judd’s are? If not you are making me feel OLD!) Pop and I got our souvenir shot glass for our collections, about forty Dr. Pepper items, and we went home with a day of memories with my sisters and another item checked off the Bucket List.
Family Pool Party
I have to say that I am very lucky I have an insanely talented group of men in my life. Between my Hubby, my Father-in-Law, and the most wonderful father in the world. The three of them could build anything. If I dream it up they make it happen as they did with our Pool Deck it turned out to be so much more than I could have dreamed up.
So we get to have many family pool parties and Memorial Day Weekend Pool Party is a must every year! We make homemade ice cream some years, burgers and hot dogs on the grill and we just all relax together for a couple of hours.
We do decorate a little but not near as much as we do for our 4th of July parties. (Hince the word relax mentioned above) Granny even gets in the pool sometimes. Although some years the water is still a little cold we still hang out and enjoy the sunshine some good music, good food, and always the most important thing is time with our loved ones.
Kinkaid Lake Boat Trip
One of our most memorable Memorial Day weekend events was two years ago. Pop and I decided we were going to spend the entire weekend Saturday Evening (after the Pool Party) till Monday night on the Pontoon Boat. Supposedly the weather was going to be perfect for this!
Saturday night we load the boat with food, drinks, clothes, coffee (a must), pillows and blankets. We were set for a weekend of Lake Life. We left the marina about the time the band started, went about two coves away where we could still hear the music but float on the lake. It was an absolutely beautiful night.
Now if you spend any time on the lake you know there will be bugs. We had this covered I had tiki torches, and the boat has a tent feature. What it doesn’t have is a sleeping spot under the tent part that is either long enough or big enough for us to both sleep on. So we decided that due to the number of bugs that night that we would sleep on the back bench and the platform. That being said being on the water with nature and the gentle rocking of the boat was so peaceful. But I really can’t say that either one of us slept very well due to those places just are not that comfy.
We made the best of it. Got up very early and made fresh coffee from a small percolator on top of the little gas grill. Then watched the sunrise on the lake is just amazing. It made being uncomfortable worth it. When the marina opened we headed there for a quick breakfast before our friends showed up for a day of fun in the sun.
We were all set then right about the time everyone was supposed to show up so did the storm. Our group does not let anything take our fun away.
So the decision was made to hang out on the boat at the dock and see what happens.
I truly lost count of how many times we would back the boat out get past the first big cove and turn around and come right back. I don’t think we have laughed that hard or got any wetter than if we had been in the lake.
It rained on and off almost the whole day. We did have a couple hours where we made it out to the cliffs. Swam for a little bit.
Cooked our food and had a few drinks (ok maybe a little more than a few). We even had our very own Gilligan
and Skipper for awhile.
The funny thing is it really was one of the most fun days we have had on the lake. I am so glad we did not cancel the trip because of the weather. That is one of the things I love the most about these people they make the most out of every situation and remember to always have fun.
I will let you in on a little secret though.
Pop and I didn’t stay on the boat again that night. I know where is our adventurous spirit right? I just wasn’t a huge fan of sleeping under the lighting. We went home and slept in our nice dry comfy bed.
In closing please take at least a few minutes to remember the true reason for the Holiday. Most of all the Men and Woman who have come before us and gave the ultimate sacrifice. So that we may continue to have the lives that we have been blessed with.
We would love to hear about your favorite Kick-Off to Summer traditions. These are just a few of the things we have done over the Memorial Day weekend. You never know what we will do next.
