“The Trees will be PRETTY THEY SAID! Not!
For a couple years now we have been taking a 3 to 4-day canoe trip over Labor Day weekend. (Make sure and check out our story about our first trip to the Upper Current River and then the one about some of the tips and tricks we used for that trip as soon as we get them done!) The weather has always been perfect. At times a little crowded on day one when everyone is taking off at the same time but never overwhelming. Always a great trip, that we look forward to every year, even without Pretty Trees!
Labor Day weekend had always worked out great for all of us with it being a 3 day weekend. Those of us who still worked full time would only need to take one day off for the trip. Well as life does, we all seemed to be getting busier and busier and it was getting harder and harder to go that time of year. So the group decided we should try to go over Columbus Day weekend.
Now if you don’t I (Loli) do not like to be cold at all… I was against this plan from the get go!!!! But when it is was 5 against 1 you guessed it yes I got overruled….. “The Tree’s will be PRETTY”, “It will be less crowded”, “We won’t be hot trying to sleep at night”, “First of October weather is still warm” on and on it went.. I really tried to get behind this idea and love it, I really really did!!!! Ok well Kinda! But either way, the trip was set.
So as we set out from our house on Thursday morning to head to the 11 point river in Missouri, it was a balmy 36 degrees out. It did warm up to 60 degrees at the time we actually got the boats in the water but that was it… the temperatures dropped the rest of the trip and you know what else… The trees were just GREEN!!!! Now don’t get me wrong the first week of April when the trees are the beautiful spring Green it could be one of my favorite colors in the entire world. But October at 36 degrees I hated green, I was promised pretty yellows, oranges, reds, and even brown leaves…..all I got were green leaves everywhere…
One of my favorite tricks on a canoeing trip is that I vacuum seal just about everything so we always have dry clothes. Well, when you have to wear them all, every day just to stay warm it is also very hard to have dry clothes……especially when it starts to rain as it did on and off for the 2nd day of the trip. I promise there is a happy ending to this trip…..
With all of that said, anytime you can be outdoors on a new or old adventure with your love, and good friends you are making memories. We actually had a blast and still talk about this trip all the time. We each took turns providing a meal for the group each night and had lunches on the banks of the river each day. Spent time around the fire each night drying our clothes talking, laughing, telling stories and really connecting with each other.
We fished from the banks and the boats each day. Even caught enough to have a shore lunch one day. If you have never had fresh fish caught and cooked on the shore over a campfire you are missing out.
When you do this you spend some real quality time with your significant other. You have no other distractions no phones, no kids, no jobs, or lawns to mow, leaves to rake,(ha ha my attempt to be funny), houses to clean, or bills to pay. It’s just you two together spending. Most of all uninterrupted time talking, just being you. Even sometimes fighting Mother Nature working together to get to the end of the trip in tack!
As for the 11 point river, it was a great river for a canoe trip. Very easy moving, wide most of the time. Therefore you could avoid areas that looked to be most dangerous as long as you were paying attention. The Trip started at Thomasville Access off of Hwy 99. Proceded a total of 27 miles to the Narrows off of Hwy 142 where we took out.
Our boat personally only got into one sticky spot where there were a bunch of trees down and just couldn’t avoid them. We didn’t panic worked together and ended up laying down flat in the boat and pulling our way through it. The waterfall we had heard so much about having to go over at the end was a little bit of a letdown. Because we were prepared for Colorado river rapids in our minds but it was still fun. It is a beautiful river. Although much different than the current river which has lots of cliffs and rock formations the 11 point is mostly hills and trees… Yes, Green Pretty Trees!
In the end, as long as you make the most of each trip it will be a great experience. (I mean I probably said: “Hey Tony, look at those PRETTY GREEN Trees” a hundred times on that trip). Yes, I was cold and sometimes wet. However, I was with people I love and outside enjoying the beautiful world we have been blessed to live in! We were making memories and we completed another item on our Bucket List. (read the reason you need a bucket list here). We canoed the 11 Point river and LoLi and Pop made another memory!
